A 4-Star Old Town Hotel for Hostel Money

Finding cheap flights is usually the easy part.
Finding a good hotel in the city center — that’s where things get expensive.

When I booked my trip to Prague at the end of January 2023, many people told me the same thing:
Prague is better in summer or during Christmas markets.
I ignored that advice — and it turned out to be a surprisingly good decision.

Traveling Light Changes Everything

I traveled with just a backpack.
No car rental. No luggage stress. No need for parking.

That meant one thing was non-negotiable:
a hotel in or near the Old Town with excellent public transport access.

Naturally, I expected high prices.
Old Town + central location + winter or not — Prague is Prague.

That’s when I found something unexpected.

A 4-Star Hotel for €56 per Night

Together with a friend, I booked Grand Majestic Hotel Prague, a 4-star hotel located right in the Old Town.

We paid €112 total for two nights (January 22–24) — breakfast included.
That’s €56 per night.

For a 4-star hotel in this location, that price honestly surprised me.

Location That Actually Matters

The hotel is positioned almost perfectly:

  • 1 minute walk to tram lines

  • Metro station right next to it

  • 5–7 minutes to the Vltava River

  • 10 minutes to Old Town Square

  • Another 10 minutes from there to Charles Bridge

In the evening, walking across Charles Bridge felt effortless — no planning, no transport headaches, just walking.

The Hotel Experience

Grand Majestic is a proper 4-star hotel:

  • 24/7 reception

  • Clean, modern rooms

  • Nice interior and lobby

  • Quiet and comfortable

To be honest, we only used the room to sleep and recharge.
Prague is a city for walking, architecture, photos, and long days outside — not for staying indoors.

Breakfast That Actually Saves You Money

One big advantage was the included breakfast.

And not the usual “bread and jam” type.
It was a full buffet with plenty of options, enough to keep you energized for an entire day of walking.

After spending the whole day exploring Prague on foot, having a solid breakfast already covered saved both time and money.

Why January Was a Smart Choice

Visiting Prague at the end of January turned out to be a great decision:

  • Fewer tourists

  • No queues

  • No overcrowded attractions

  • Calm city atmosphere

And about the cold — it really wasn’t a problem.

I walked comfortably in sneakers, jeans, a light sweater, and a fall jacket.
No heavy winter gear. No freezing temperatures.

Prague’s winter is much milder than many expect.

One Honest Drawback

Some attractions are closed during winter.
For example, Labyrinth in Troja Gardens was not accessible.

If your goal is to visit every single attraction, summer is a better option.
But for city walks, museums, architecture, and atmosphere — winter works perfectly.

Final Thoughts

Prague left me with a very positive impression:

  • Clean city

  • Beautiful architecture

  • Excellent public transport

  • Unified tickets for metro, tram, and buses

  • Modern vehicles mixed with classic ones

  • Google Maps works flawlessly for transport planning

And most importantly —
finding a centrally located 4-star hotel for the price of a hostel is absolutely possible if you travel smart and choose the right timing.
