Arriving in Venice Late at Night: What Actually Happens (and What to Prepare)

We arrived in Venice at the end of January. Our plane landed at the airport around 9–10 PM. We had booked accommodation through Booking right on the island of Venice, in one of those old houses that stretch along the canals.
From the airport we needed to reach the island. If you arrive late at night and prefer not to deal with buses or schedules, another option is to pre-book a private airport transfer from Venice Airport to the city. We could have taken a taxi to get there faster, but instead we decided to take a bus from the airport stop. Buses run regularly from the airport to Venice and the trip is relatively quick. After a short ride we arrived near the train station area — one of the main entry points to the city.
From there we had to reach our accommodation on foot.
The moment we walked away from the station area, we immediately noticed something unexpected: an incredible silence. It was night, the lights were soft and dim, and the streets were almost completely empty. Occasionally we would see a dog or a single person somewhere in the distance, but that was it. Narrow streets, small bridges over canals, and total quiet.
Instead of rushing to the apartment, we walked slowly and simply enjoyed the atmosphere. It felt like we were seeing the real Venice exactly as it is.
Since the streets were empty, we could stop whenever we wanted, take photos, and walk around without being bothered by anyone.

Finding the Apartment Was Harder Than Expected
We thought reaching the apartment with Google Maps would be easy, but it turned out not to be that simple.
Because Venice has many narrow streets running very close to each other, even a small GPS error can send you to the wrong place. Google Maps would show that we had arrived, but the apartment was actually on a parallel street.
After a few attempts and a bit of wandering we eventually managed to orient ourselves and finally found the apartment.

Cold Apartments in Winter
We arrived late at night, at the end of January, in one of those old Venetian houses hidden between canals. Naturally, the apartment was very cold inside.
The walls were thick and old, the surroundings humid because of the canals, and the interior felt dark and chilly. Even though we turned on the heating as soon as we arrived, it didn’t help much in such a short time.
Because of this, if you plan to visit Venice during the colder months, it’s better to arrive earlier in the day. That way you can turn the heating on and let the apartment warm up while you spend the day exploring the city.
Otherwise, you might end up spending your first night sleeping in a very cold room.
Finding Food Late at Night
Another thing to keep in mind is food.
By the time we arrived most markets were already closed, and many restaurants had finished serving for the night. We walked around for a while looking for something to eat.
Eventually we found a small place selling pizza by the slice. We bought a couple of slices and a drink and went back to the apartment. Otherwise we might have spent the night not only cold, but also hungry.
Because of this, if you arrive late it might be a good idea to eat somewhere before going to the island — for example in Mestre or near the airport — or at least bring something with you.
Visiting Venice in Winter
One thing that surprised us was the canals. Many people had warned us that Venice smells because of the water in the canals, but during winter there was absolutely no unpleasant smell. We assume the cold weather helps with that.
Another advantage of visiting Venice in winter is that it is not peak tourist season. The narrow streets are not crowded, so you can walk comfortably and take photos without constantly being surrounded by people.

Venice at Night Has a Special Atmosphere
Even though most people explore Venice during the day, the city has a completely different charm at night.
Because of the silence, the lack of people, and the soft lighting, Venice feels mysterious and calm. The reflections of the lights in the canals create beautiful scenes everywhere.
If you enjoy photography, the empty streets at night allow you to capture places that are usually crowded during the day.
Walking through Venice at night, in complete silence, was honestly one of the most memorable parts of the visit.
