I’ve visited Brasov multiple times, in different seasons and at different times of the day, and in this article I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth visiting or not, what to pay attention to, how to save time, and what mistakes to avoid.

In my opinion, Brasov is one of the most beautiful cities in Romania — possibly the most beautiful.

Naturally, the Old Town is the main tourist area and the reason most people come here. But compared to many other cities, not only in Romania but across Europe, Brasov remains attractive even outside the center. The same architectural style, clean streets, organized sidewalks, and overall atmosphere continue throughout most of the city.

And cleanliness matters here. Brasov is one of the cleanest cities in Romania and honestly could serve as an example for many others.

Where to Stay in Brasov

Now that you know the city is not beautiful only around Piața Sfatului, here’s one of the easiest ways to save money: stay slightly outside the Old Town.

Accommodation prices in the ultra-central area can become expensive, especially during summer and weekends. Staying 10–15 minutes away on foot can reduce prices noticeably.

But here’s the important part:

Brasov has relief.

A listing saying “10 minutes from center” can easily become a 25–30 minute uphill walk.

Before booking:

• check the real walking route on Google Maps

• look at elevation differences

• think about luggage and fatigue

Best Season to Visit Brasov

Summer is beautiful but crowded.

The Old Town becomes full of tourists almost all day long, and prices increase accordingly. You walk outside at night and the city is still alive — restaurants full, people walking everywhere, movement on every street.

Personally, I actually enjoy this atmosphere. Brasov feels alive almost nonstop during peak season.

But if I had to choose the best compromise, I would say: autumn.

Brasov is an extremely green city, and when autumn colors arrive, the entire atmosphere changes. The parks, hills, and streets become golden and much more photogenic.

At the same time:

• temperatures remain comfortable

• prices improve

• crowds become manageable

For me, Brasov in autumn is close to perfect.

Parking in Brasov (Important)

If you arrive by car, pay attention here because many tourists lose time, money, and nerves with parking.

Parking is paid in most areas of the city, especially near the center.

In the Old Town:

• parking spots are limited

• fines appear quickly

• some areas are residential or restricted

The easiest solution is using the TPARK mobile app, which works in many Romanian cities and allows card payment directly from your phone.

Official parking rates and rules change periodically, so always check the latest information locally or inside the app.

My honest recommendation: once you park the car, leave it there.

Brasov is much better explored on foot.

Traffic during peak hours can become slow because of narrow streets, traffic lights, and tourism pressure.

Worst hours:

• 08:00–10:00

• 16:30–19:00

• weekend afternoons

Public Transport and Taxis

Brasov has a reasonably good public transport network with buses serving most important areas of the city.

Tickets are inexpensive and public transport is usually more efficient than moving your car constantly through the center.

When it comes to taxis: avoid random taxis near the train station.

Some drivers “forget” the meter or take unnecessarily long routes.

Instead:

• use Bolt/Uber if available

• or ask your hotel to call a trusted company

What Brasov Is Really Like

Brasov is one of the few cities where tourism and daily life coexist surprisingly well.

Yes, the Old Town is the postcard area:

• Republicii Street

• Black Church

• cafés and terraces

But the real charm often starts beyond the main square.

Walk through:

• smaller side streets

• inner courtyards

• Scheii Brasovului

• quieter residential areas

That’s where Brasov feels most authentic.

And if you wake up early enough, go explore the center around 7–9 AM.

Almost no tourists, soft light, quiet streets — completely different atmosphere.

Food in Brasov

Food quality in Brasov is generally very good, especially if you focus on Romanian and local-style dishes.

Romanians know how to cook meat properly, so this is the place where:

• grilled dishes

• soups

• pork-based meals

• papanasi

• bulz

• traditional platters

usually work very well.

I would personally avoid seafood or Asian food here unless the restaurant specializes in it.

One place where I had genuinely good food was Next Door Restaurant in Piața Sfatului, where I ate BBQ ribs with coleslaw and potatoes for around €15.

Tourist Trap Restaurants Exist

Not every restaurant in the center is worth your time.

Some ultra-central places survive mainly from tourist traffic rather than quality.

Red flags:

• aggressive hostess outside

• giant menus with pizza + sushi + burgers + pasta + soup + everything else

• inflated drink/desert prices

• slow service

Brasov is also one of the best bases in Romania for day trips.

Nearby you have:

But don’t try to do everything in one weekend.

Many tourists create impossible itineraries like:

• Brasov

• Bran

• Sinaia

• Peleș

all in 2 days.

That’s not a vacation anymore. That’s traffic and exhaustion.

Poiana Brasov Tips

During winter, Poiana Brasov becomes beautiful — and chaotic.

Parking can turn into a circus, and renting ski equipment directly near the slopes is usually more expensive.

A cheaper strategy:

• rent equipment in Brasov before going up

• or reserve online in advance

Is Brasov Worth Visiting?

Absolutely yes.

Brasov works extremely well for:

• couples

• families

• relaxed city breaks

• nature lovers

• road trips through Romania

It combines:

• mountains

• nature

• walkable streets

• history

• good food

• nearby attractions

better than almost any other Romanian city.

But if you are looking mainly for:

• luxury

• premium nightlife

• massive shopping districts

• nonstop parties

then Brasov may not be the ideal destination.

Final Thoughts

Brasov is one of those rare cities that manages to feel both touristic and authentic at the same time.

You can spend the morning walking through quiet medieval streets, the afternoon exploring nearby mountains or castles, and the evening eating good food while the Old Town remains full of life.
