If you are visiting Brasov, you should seriously consider making a stop at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti, located about 25–30 km from Brasov.

But I’ll tell you something immediately:

Don’t come here expecting an Instagram location, a place for cool photos, or some kind of tourist attraction where you simply say “wow” and leave.

That’s not really what this place is about.

Yes, you will see bears.

But the real reason to come here is to understand a much bigger story.

A sad one.

The Largest Brown Bear Sanctuary in the World

Libearty Sanctuary covers almost 70 hectares of forest and currently shelters more than 100 rescued brown bears. It officially opened in 2005, created to give abused bears a second chance at life.

These are not wild bears living freely in nature.

Many came from:

• tiny cages behind restaurants

• circuses

• old zoos

• private properties

• abusive captivity conditions

Others are bears that became too dependent on humans and could no longer survive safely in the wild.

Some bears here do not know how to survive alone anymore.

Some never learned to hunt.

Some cannot properly defend themselves.

For many of them, this sanctuary is quite literally their only chance to live.

The Bear Problem in Romania Is Often Created by Humans

This was probably the biggest thing I took away from the visit.

People often think they are helping bears.

They are not.

Tourists stop on mountain roads, throw bread or food from the car, take photos, and feel good about themselves.

But what actually happens is much worse.

The bears slowly learn:

"Humans = food."

Instead of staying deep in the forest and searching naturally for food, they begin returning to roads and populated areas.

And once that behavior starts, problems appear:

• bears approach villages

• bears approach cars

• bears become more comfortable around people

• accidents happen

And sadly, when something goes wrong, it’s usually the bear that pays the price.

Not the tourist.

Stop Feeding Bears

So let me make this part simple:

DO NOT FEED BEARS.

Not bread.

Not fruit.

Not anything.

You may think you're helping.

You are not.

You are teaching a wild animal to become dependent on people.

And that often ends badly.

The Stories Hit Harder Than the Bears Themselves

The guides do not simply walk you around showing animals.

You hear stories.

Stories about bears that spent years in tiny cages.

Stories about bears kept as entertainment.

Stories that honestly make you stop for a moment and think.
