Soroca Fortress: Is It Worth It + What to Expect (2026 Guide)

How to Visit Soroca Fortress (2026 Guide)

In this article, I’ll show you how to visit Soroca Fortress, one of the most important tourist attractions in northern Moldova and a key historical site that stands out through its structure and history.

The fortress was closed during winter for exhibition improvements and will reopen to visitors starting April 1, 2026. So if you’re planning a trip, now is a good time to schedule your visit.

How to Get to Soroca Fortress

If you’re already nearby, the easiest option is to come by car.

If you’re traveling from abroad, you’ll first need to fly into Chișinău. You can search for flights on Aviasales to find the best option.

Once you arrive in Chișinău, you have two main options:

Option 1: Rental Car

You can rent a car and drive to Soroca in about 2 hours.

Prices usually start from around €35–40 per day, and you get full flexibility with your schedule.

If you go this route, try to avoid renting directly at the airport, as prices are usually higher. Instead, book in advance through DiscoverCars for better deals.

Also, be careful while driving — Moldova has speed cameras, especially in Chișinău and on national roads.

Option 2: Minibus

If you’re traveling solo, this is usually the cheaper option.

Minibuses to Soroca depart from Gara de Nord in Chișinău. Tickets can be purchased directly at the station from the ticket counters, and you can usually pay by cash or card.

  • Price: around €6–7 one way

  • Total: about €12–15 round trip

Buses run frequently throughout the day until evening, making this a reliable and budget-friendly option.

Entrance, Opening Hours & Tickets

Soroca Fortress is open to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 17:30. It’s usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and during winter periods when maintenance or exhibitions are updated.

Ticket prices are very affordable:

  • Adults: 30 MDL (~€1.5)

  • Children: 10 MDL (~€0.5)

Tickets can be purchased directly at the entrance or from small ticket booths located in the nearby park.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is in the morning.

This gives you enough time to:

  • explore the fortress

  • walk around the area

  • take photos

  • visit other nearby places

If you’re planning more than just the fortress, check this complete Soroca travel guide where I cover all the main attractions and what’s actually worth your time.

If you want to plan your entire day efficiently around the fortress, I’ve put together a one-day Soroca itinerary that shows exactly how to structure your visit.

Avoid Weekends if Possible

During the warmer months, weekends can get very crowded, especially with school groups and tourist buses.

If you want a quieter experience and better photos, visit during weekdays.

Nearby Spot Worth Visiting

Right behind the fortress, just a short walk away, you’ll find the first café from the local chain CoffeIn.

It’s a great place to stop after your visit — good coffee, a modern vibe, and surprisingly good desserts.

Language Tip

Most people in the area don’t speak much English. Romanian and Russian are the most common languages.

If you need help, try asking younger people — they’re more likely to understand and assist you.

Want to Learn the History?

Final Thoughts

This article might feel a bit straightforward, but that’s probably because I grew up in Soroca. I’ve visited the fortress dozens of times inside and passed by it hundreds, if not thousands, of times.

But don’t let that fool you.

Every time I pass by, I still see tourists standing there, genuinely impressed — even if they had only seen it in photos before.

And that says everything.

Soroca Fortress is absolutely worth visiting.
